Our Thoughts Lie to Us

Uncategorized Aug 20, 2018

One of the biggest issues with distorted thinking is that you truly don't think there is anything wrong. Our thoughts tell us that we are the problem, and in those moments of despair, we tell ourselves that there is no "fix" to who we are at our core. We are just simply not enough.

I remember my very first "a-ha" moment.

I was listening to a podcast and I overheard one of the hosts say, "our thoughts lie to us".

In that moment, it was almost as if someone had used a defibrillator to restart my heart that had seemed to flatline months prior.

In an instant, I had felt hope. In an instant, I felt seen for the very first time, and it was as if they were reminding me that this version of myself was not who I truly was...that something really was wrong.

I wanted to share my story today, because I want you to know that I see you. I see the real you. I see you struggling. Sadness, anger, frustration...they are all normal feelings, but to feel those emotions day in and day out are not.

Anxiety disorders affect 18% of the population every year and is the leading cause of disability worldwide.

Often times, we assume that if we can just change our actions, we will be able to drown out the pain. We buy a new shirt, we get a hair cut, we get our nails done...this is "self care" after all, right?

These external things we seek are just a band aid. They give us a momentary high and in an instant, that feeling is gone and we are back to square one. The problem is that nothing we do will ever change how we feel. In fact, the more we do, the less we feel.

You cannot solve internal problems with an external solution and in-spite of what some self-help authors and well intentioned friends may tell you, you cannot DIY your mental health.

Knowing something is wrong is the first step, but taking action is the important part.

It can be so hard to make that leap and get help, but just as we see doctors for broken bones, sore throats, and infections, it's necessary to see a therapist when our thoughts are broken...when our hearts are broken.

So tell me, what is holding you back? I really want to take this week to dive into fears, uncertainty, (IG_@stefanireinoldmd/ FB_Stefani Reinold MD) - and questions you may have about where to begin.

Leave a comment, e-mail me (stefanireinoldmd.com), or message me on one of my social media platforms. My hand is out just waiting for you to grab hold. Don't spend one more day suffering.
